Welcome to Vagari’s 7th winter of sailing. We have put 8,000 miles under Vagari’s keel during those cruises but this year like last year won’t be a high mileage year. We just don’t have the lust for the long cruises that we did when we started cruising but we still enjoy living on board and sailing near our homeport. Welcome aboard! We hope you enjoy our blog. Your comments, questions and suggestions are appreciated and encouraged.

NOT A PRETTY DAY

Even before the day started it was not good. Strong winds from the west were predicted at night. Our buddy boat suggested we move to an anchorage that gave better protection from the west winds than San Juanico. We anchored with tall cliffs to our west. After we were in bed the winds started. We were in a good place but I couldn't sleep for a few hours because of the noise and concern.

Knowing we had a long 45 mile day ahead of us I got up a little early to get Rhea's coffee ready. The stove didn't light. The propane tank was empty. We have been using this tank since October so no surprise. Vagari has two tanks and I could install the new one while underway.

The weather forecast was: #1 SE winds 15 to 20 kts strongest near Point Conception", that's where we were going and the wind direction was perfect; #2 "no wind in the northern crossing area" that's ok with us also. We can live with motoring in flat seas if we have to; #3 via email which I pay for "ENE max 11 kts in the afternoon waves one foot or less" that's OK also.

The first two hours we great sailing winds out of the west. Then the wind went northwest, just the direction we were headed. The waves and winds increased and we were pounding in the waves with spray flying and our motor roaring. That continued until two hours from the anchorage.

However sailing is like life or cards; you make the best with what you have.

Even worse not a single strike on my fishing line.

We did sail the last 10 miles without the engine and we made surprisingly good time due to a favorable tide and a wind angle that allowed us to use the mainsail a little.

Finally, Rhea made an outstanding meal for our buddy boat guests and us. The anchorage and the sunset were Sea of Cortez beautiful.

Tomorrow will be better I'm sure.
